My Scholarship entry - Beyond the Palms

Jamaica | Thursday, November 6, 2014 | 5 photos

I was lucky enough to gain a passion for travelling at a young age and always had a camera with me to capture those funny family moments abroad. About two years ago I realized I could combine my love of traveling with photography and started taking photography seriously. My photography mainly consisted of landscapes and wildlife images in the beginning, but I found my true passion was in photojournalism. I attempt to capture moments framed amidst their natural settings to tell a story that inspires, draws attention and illustrates a cultural way of life. I have just returned from Southeast Asia where I was photographing endangered Asiatic Black Bears in order to bring awareness to their treatment in bear bile farms. Photography is a perfect medium to portray a story because it allows the viewer to study an image for an extended period of time thus giving them a feel for the setting the photograph was taken in. I am still new to photography; every time I am out shooting I seem to learn something new. I consider my work to be decent, but I know it can be better and I hope that if I win this scholarship, working with Jason Edwards will take my photography skills to the next level.
