My Scholarship entry - Giving back on the road

WORLDWIDE | Friday, 13 April 2012 | Views [407] | Scholarship Entry

Every year in December for the past 5 years I have had the opportunity to travel across South Africa between Cape Town and Tzaneen in Limpopo visiting friends and family members during the Christmas break. From the beautiful oceans and tranquil mountain scenery in Cape town, right through to the dry plains in the quiet Karoo, all the way to the ever sunny cultural province of Limpopo, the beauty of the natural undisturbed environment hits you like freezing water in your face. During this long drive with my family, we have the chance to just absorb the breath taking serenity that the Karoo route has to offer. Giving back to those less fortunate has always been a passion of mine and doing it while travelling with loved ones and seeing the beauty of the different aspects of mother nature is a true blessing
In such long distance travels, it’s always an amazing experience taking time to communicate with the locals and help them out in one of their social developmental projects. South Africa has been blessed with immense diversity and it is always a welcome experience to share in the local culture and making a difference in someone’s life. The Khoisan people in the Karoo are a notable example. Playing with the children and spending time with the elderly is always fulfilling and adds meaning to my life. Being exposed the individuality of each ethnic group in South Africa is an opportunity that few people have the chance to experience.
Giving back is one of the most rewarding experiences in life. Our nations father figure Nelson Mandela once said “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart”. I believe the same goes for giving back. Spending time with someone who is less fortunate and making them feel important and special leaves a greater mark on their lives than handing them food or clothing. It leaves behind a legacy that touches both lives and will never be forgotten.
