Have you got a child? Yali enquired, and where about you live in Israel? Actually I live in England. But your husband is Israeli, Jewish, right? She pressed. No, is Italian, and is Roman-Catholic. He gave me a daughter, who was born in the UK but was raised in Canada. At this point Yali was looking straight at me from behind the cloud of cigarette smoke: and you come here asking me about identity?
When I came back to Israel with the idea of filming this mysterious ancient community, the Samaritans, I brought with me curiosity, respect and honesty. Through a common friend I met Yali, a single mother of two who had been ostracised from the community for choosing a non Samaritan as life partner. Her story turned into a challenging probe into my own convictions and preconceptions, and my voyage soon turned into a dialogue.
With my filmmaking I would like to try and bring emotions and personal perspectives alive. I aspire to act as a medium for persons of all kinds to tell real stories, in the way they live them. This is I believe the best way to touch people’s hearts and minds.
