Grace and Poise...
When I passed this girl I had an initial desire to look over my shoulder for someone photographing her. Her poise and grace was nothing short of a trained professional and yet she sat, engaged in nothing but the thoughts of her own reality. Was she one of the luckier ones? The Karnataka region is home to thousands of Devadasi women. A religious custom that originally gave Devadasi women status and yet over the centuries has deteriorated to a life of prostitution and the fear of HIV. For many, children as young as 12 are introduced to the industry in order to support their family.
