My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

India | Thursday, August 19, 2010 | 4 photos

I’ve always found myself fascinated with the way light captured on film can show so much more of the magic in a moment; than what you see while you’re actively present in that space, capturing it.
I also enjoy the control you have as a photographer to focus on certain details over others, to tell the story you wish to tell through a photo –all a combination of instincts, aesthetics and visual presence.

When looking through some of the really good photographs out there, I find myself focusing on the detail in the object, the play of the negative space and I find that the composition of a picture and its depth tells a ‘photo’ apart from just a quick, hasty snapshot. As I look through my own photographs, I feel like if I had the right equipment (and possibly some advice on technique), they could help me achieve an output of a higher caliber and intensity.

Most importantly - I enjoy the happy accidents that occur in my own photography and that some of them end up becoming my favorite shots – but this experience would help me become more aware of the techniques and mechanics that I can configure to achieve the very same output, at will.

Earning this scholarship opportunity would help me grow as a photographer and give me the chance to help bring more travel into my life. I can only hope to take as much as possible from the experience and turn it into something better, if not bigger.

My pictures submitted to this application are taken by a simple digital camera on a tour I took back in 2008 to Rajasthan in India. The photos speak for themselves.

If offered the selection to indulge in this project: the chance to work with a mentor and the professional equipment to enhance the experience – and travel- I can’t think of a better way to spend my week in December!
