Sept. 4: Dax & environs

FRANCE | Thursday, 6 September 2012 | Views [93]

Still dealing with the tire replacement. Garage has to order the tire from another town which is causing more delays.

So, today, we took a day trip over to the town of Dax.  Wandered around, in and out of shops, along the river, and then lunch at a cute cafe.  Decide to take back roads back home and drove through some very pretty little towns - including Brassempouy where they found caves and a 25,000 year old sculpture of a lady's head.  Carved out of mammoth ivory, said to be the oldest known carving of a woman's head and hairstyle.  The actual piece is quite tiny and resides in a museum in Paris, but they have larger than life versions in this little town to commerate where it was found.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus_of_Brassempouy if you're interested in more information.
