To See the World in a Grain of Red Dirt

The Land of Infinity; Theldarpa

AUSTRALIA | Wednesday, 27 May 2015 | Views [133] | Scholarship Entry

For a large portion of the population, the concept of "dropping off the grid" and "getting away from it all" holds a certain appeal. In particular the nomadic among us are always seeking an unknown local to explore, a place where humanity has scarcely set foot. I am no exception, and I have never felt so utterly alone as I did in Outback Australia.
The term Outback Australia brings to mind certain images, most containing Uluru, kangaroo's or Paul Hogan. On my journey I only saw one of these things, but I believe I experienced one of the most authentic and original adventures that Australia has to offer.
This particularly trip was a family one. My dad, my brother, myself and the dogs. I'll skip an in depth description of the journey, because it is quiet a road trip to get anywhere in Oz. The necessary details are a four wheel drive, a tent and some spectacular scenery. There are plenty of places to camp but few amenities, so preparation and experience are recommended.
After a weeks travel from Brisbane City, we arrived at our destination; the four and a half million acre property, Theldarpa. If this figure sounds incomprehensibly large, that's because it very nearly is. We were driving through a privately owned land bigger then many European countries.
We stood in as caretakers of the homestead for the week, and if you get the opportunity I highly suggest you do the same. The experience of standing in an area so vast and hearing pure silence will change you; you will come to understand the concept of the land of infinity, and what it really means to get away from it all.
