The paris of south america

ARGENTINA | Sunday, 7 December 2008 | Views [495]

This city is simply amazing. Probably the most attractive city i have ever been in. With immense wealth in the early 1900s (being one of the top 4 richest countries in the world), extravagent building projects were constructed. Grand avenues, beautiful and numerous city parks, stautes, and french colonial buildings are everywhere in the city.

This is the paris of south america. The cafe culture is huge here. Family and friends frequently have a chat over an expresso and some pound cake. Its great. Its sooo relaxing. I think without the cafe culture the city would turn into a mayhem of people out and about. This place has 13 million people but it doesnt feel like that at all. Around my hostel there is the big avindida 9 de julio. The thing is huge!! With a huge olesisk in the middle. Also there is the avendido de mayo which goes down to the great plaza de mayo.

The highlight so far has been the cemetario de recoleta. Getting there was a bit of story. We got onto the bus that was supposed to take us there and all of a sudden we were just riding along and they turned to us and started shouting at me and the girl i was traveling with, shanna, a canadian who just arrived to learn tango. I guess they just knew we were tourists and a lady in english said get out here so we did not knowing exactly what was goin on but it was like only 1 block away. The cemetary de recoleta is a walled exclusive cemetary for the elite argentinans during the late 1890s until early 1900s. The place is unbelievable. Huge masoleums that would are everywhere, with large statues, fountains adorned on many of the masoleums. The famous Maria Eva Duarte de Peron (former argentinan first lady/ Don´t cry for me argentina) is laid to rest here with her family.

After that the girl and i was with there stopped and had a coffee at the famous cafe near the cemetario. Its located under this massive tree. That has to be like 20 to 30 feet wide. After walking so far it felt sooo relaxing just having a chat there. After that we had quite the mix up as she bought the wrong memory card and we had to exchange it for a different one, it was a bit of a hassle but not a huge deal.
