My Scholarship entry - Aotearoa: A Wildlife Cross-Section

I got my first camera when I was four years old; it was bright red and only took 110 format film in those funny-shaped canisters. Fast-forward nineteen years and my gear hasn't been upgraded all that much, and I've still never had a single photography lesson. I first started dreaming about working for National Geographic when I was about nine. Fast-forward fourteen years and my dreams haven't changed all that much. There is nowhere I feel more at home than behind a lens, any lens, doing my best to tell a better story with images than I could with words. Photography gives me an opportunity to synthesize documentation and symbol, fact and emotion. As is hopefully evident from my images, I especially love engaging with animals, and love showing how they are, as much as we are, a kind of people, with culture and thought, however alien to our minds.

I'm not the best photographer in the world. But I've been teaching myself, very slowly, for a long time, and if I were to finally get that first photography lesson, a lot of potential would come undammed. There is nothing I could throw more sweat and passion into than this. I don't have delusions of grandeur. I just want to learn.
