My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Canada | Friday, July 5, 2013 | flickr photos

Sometimes the smallest discovery can change your life forever.

Finding my dad's Nikomat in my mid-twenties was just that. I claimed the camera as my own, but did not know how to expose film. I learned the technical aspects of photography from the owner of a vintage camera store and the Nat Geo field guide for photographers.

Breaking into a career in photojournalism has been a challenge. I'm self taught and don't have any credentials. I love communicating narrative visually; this is what drives me to make images. I still have a lot to learn about the industry before I become a professional photojournalist. This mentorship would give me the opportunity to refine my skills and receive critique from an expert; I've never had this.

When I graduated from high school I worked in Australia for two years. I had many profound experiences and became a commercial diver/welder when I returned to Canada. Since then I've traveled to many countries, often volunteering my photography skills to NGOs. I would relish an opportunity to transition into a professional photography career and I believe this scholarship would be instrumental in helping me do that. Thank you for your consideration.
