Alone In The Desert

My Scholarship entry - 14 explorers. 6 weeks. Trekking through the Desert

Namibia | Saturday, November 15, 2014 | 5 photos

My Name is Scarlet, I am 19 and am currently in the middle of my year out between school and university. I have chosen to take this break in order to pursue what I find exciting - photography. Throughout my time in education I have been instructed to produce pages and pages of writing in an attempt to convey my point. It seems strange to me that so much attention is focused on this method of communication when it is accessible to so little. A picture is often said to speak a thousand words, but just as importantly, it is understood in thousands of languages, and this is why I find photography so compelling. When I was 17 I seized the opportunity to take an expedition through the Namibian desert with the British Exploring Society. I had two factors which motivated me to do this - 1. The opportunity to push myself out of my comfort zone. 2. The opportunity to venture to undiscovered places and to capture on film things no person had seen before. My time in the desert was incredible. Not easy, not even necessary fun. It was overwhelming, barren and beautiful. Everything demanded to be photographed and appreciated. I learnt a lot from it, but would love to have a chance to learn more.
