Survival in False Bay, South Africa

I am an aspiring conservation photographer and marine mammal biologist from Boulder, Colorado. One of my heroes, Jacques Cousteau, once said “People protect what they love”. My goal is to show people the beauty in the world around them in order to inspire them to love and protect our planet. I am currently in Auckland, New Zealand working on a research project that utilizes photography to catalogue dolphin and whale populations by photographing their fins to identify individuals. In the future, I would like to find new ways to use photography to learn more about the behavior of marine species and incorporate photography into science. I was a National Geographic GeoStories volunteer photographer for the Rocky Mountain National Park Bioblitz, the experience inspired me to be a conservation photographer. Photography for me is both a passion and a compulsion. I have had countless nightmares in which there is an amazing scene or event and my camera isn’t working, the batteries run out, or it just won’t focus! I primarily shoot with a Canon 60D, but I also love experimenting with film, especially 120 film and double exposures. This experience would be invaluable!
