London Freerunning

Documentary Scholarship 2011 entry

In London, you can pass a thousand locals in a day and know nothing of who they are when they’re not wearing their business suits.

I knew Shi professionally, and was intrigued to discover that when she was not draughting and designing as a practicing London architect, she was doing urban freerunning, or parkour. As her travel agent, Shi in turn was just as surprised by my obsession for filmmaking.

Inspired by this happy breakdown of London’s rigid societal assumptions, I shot and edited this depiction of Shi’s love for expressing herself through parkour, outside of the “nine to five”.

Having travelled extensively before becoming manager of a travel agency, I know there are as many astounding stories to be told as there are people on this Beautiful Blue World. Winning this scholarship would mean the Earth to me. It would be a bold step towards a career as a filmmaker so that I might take part in their telling.

To me, documentary filmmaking is the perfect and productive synergy between my travel lust, energetic creativity, my adoration of the aesthetics of the moving image, and the pure joy of telling a darn good story.

Thanks for your consideration.
