Ladakh

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Friday, October 15, 2010 | 5 photos

I travelled to Ladakh in the Himalayas of Northern India earlier this year. After feeling drained of my creativity from three years of studying this was a stimulating and inspiring place to reconnect with this instinct. I found it exuberating to find a rhythm in which I could communicate with the people and landscape through my lens. I have decided to enter five photographs that I feel give a small glimpse in to the stories that I encountered there.

I decided to travel to Ladakh as I wanted to experience how the impact of a landscape could change me.The epic mountains, colour palette and high altitude, as well as the humble nature of the locals and the communal culture are far removed from my life in Australia. It was special to go somewhere so remote, only able to be reached by road three months of the year.

I have always loved taking photographs. I have had the pleasure of studying at the Victorian College of the Arts for three years graduating in 2009. I worked a lot with analogue film and in the dark room which I enjoyed. I feel that this gave me a good grounding for when I starting working with digital photography more recently.

The idea of learning from a professional in this kind of environment is very exciting. Although when I first finished studying my energy levels were low, I now feel passionate and ready to learn more. My plans for the next couple of years are to either assist a professional photographer or continue on with further studies or both, as I feel I have only just scratched the surface of what there is to know about this art form.
