My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Thailand | Monday, January 14, 2013 | 5 photos

It’s my primary goal to make a positive difference via the photographic medium. Areas of interest currently include; the rights of migrants, women’s health and environmental abuses.

I spent 2011 volunteering as a photographer at an elephant sanctuary in Thailand. I became aware of the mistreatment of animals & the exploitation of migrant workers. I created a photo project highlighting the relationship between the elephants and migrant caretakers. In 2012 I worked on many smaller projects whilst living in Chiang Mai city.

Having studied at the Foundry Photojournalism Workshop I know that the role of a mentor is invaluable. This scholarship will allow me to broaden my skills, experience and understanding of production. I hope to learn about social considerations in foreign cultures, making connections with & respecting the subjects to achieve the best outcome.

I intend to gain as much experience and advice from as many professionals as I can. I’m aiming to develop a portfolio that will gain recognition for the issues I explore. Ultimately I would like to work with an agency and develop my portfolio to a calibre acceptable for consideration by National Geographic or World Press.
