Nevado del Tolima: climbing fears

COLOMBIA | Monday, 12 May 2014 | Views [459] | Scholarship Entry

It was summer in Colombia and there were no plans for holidays. So, I talk to my friend Viviana about ideas. She came out with going to the top, yes, very top, of a mountain... I freaked out.
I am a kind of person who likes relax activities such us walking, playing basketball or even hanging around with friends. But I am also a kechwa indigenous, there is something in my heart desiring to go to the wild. And although all my fears my answer was: yes, let's do it. We called a friend of her, Eduardo, he already climbed three mountains, and was the perfect man to take us there. In two hours everything was arranged. People, equipment, money, and extra money just in case. Two days latter at 8 o'clock in the morning a minivan was taken us to our first destination: Ibague.
Ibague is a small city, pretty warm, with kind citizens, and off course, good food. We took a short breakfast before we get a jeep, which is like a taxi to the rural area, to a place called "la cabaña".
Even it is a place close to Ibague it is actually very cold. Now we are at 2600 meters over sea level.
We spent the night in tents, cook together in the kitchen of the family who lives there, and in the morning we left the place for a 6 hours walking up to the mountain to our next camp at 4000 meters over sea level.
As we were walking one step at a time I remembered something I heard in the first camp: last week they brought back down a guy who climb it alone, he died frozen at 4200m. Neither I or my friends wants that. Not me, it is my first time doing this and I wanna tell the story to my kids something. Eduardo is in front of the group, his brother is just behind, my friend viviana is besides me smiling, another man is the last one, we do not him probably is Eduardo's friend.
In our way we found lots of trees down, rocks, mud, waterfalls, and more. It has been 5 hours walking with two stops. One for eating and the other to enjoy the view. I swear I was really nervous when we literally climb wet rocks and cross side to side in between giant trees. It was also raining all the way there... and the way back. It was 3 in the afternoon when we get to the second camp. The coldness went through the clothes, no gloves, or huts, either the best jacket could resist the altitude of the mountain and we still had to go 1200 mts to achieve the top.
Four o'clock in the morning, we were 6 and only four decided to continue... I wanted to go. But we only got to 5000. There was only 200 to the goal. I'm sorry.
