My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Sunrise and sunset—a display of transient hues on varied planes; a realization of the fleeting moments in time, and my two favourite times of the day. I love the duality that exists behind this phenomenon. The rising sun is the beginning of dusk elsewhere. An on-going cycle which with no two identical moments; continuously shifting and changing during its passage. My life parallels this flux as I journey between my two homes—one in Ashland, WI, U.S. and the other in Islamabad, Pakistan. Sunsets and sunrises encompass parts of both worlds I tread in. When the sun sets on one home, it is rising in the other.
The past year in Islamabad, I have been religiously chasing the sunrise, in an attempt to find the right spot to capture its ephemeral shades. Now, back in Ashland, I find myself biking towards the sun, only to capture it disappearing over the horizon of Lake Superior. I feel I have come full circle with this photographic study of light while continuing my passion of linking the two places that I hold so close to my soul. Photography to me is a medium that connects. It strengthens the weave of humanity and bridges the gap. Simultaneously satiating my spirit, as it dances to the rhythmic click of the shutter.
My goal has always been to photograph elements in their natural setting and environments-whether it is the raw humanity of the floods in Pakistan or the macro level of reflections in raindrops. I believe in perseverance and I strive for the perfect shot . This scholarship is an opportunity to help me hone the skills needed to be a photographer in the field. To be able to capture the subject when time is of the essence and there are no second chances.
