CHI-CA-GO

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

USA | Friday, October 1, 2010 | 5 photos

My 'CHI·CA·GO' series of images comprises of various shots of how I see city life, specifically Chicago, IL. I am from a small town in South Florida, and Chicago was my first taste of a real city. I aimed to capture it's plus and minuses. I looked for detail, stories to tell, and hearts to warm. One of my images call for investigation with shapes and values causing a viewers eyes to scatter and wonder before realizing they are simply ants. These ants represent the multitude of people in the city. As the ants cover the ground they hunt for food, a home, and whatever else catches their attention much like people on the streets. In my images I discover hope and despair with the underground life of the 'L', Chicago's subway system which is home to many that don't have one. Like most cities Chicago is also a place for dreams and aspirations for one to rise to. I portray this with proportion in a few of my images. Chicago is a city I would not mind to one day call home to further examine it's rich culture and history. My series is the real 'Taste of Chicago' full of sweet, spicy, and beautiful things to discover through my view of the great city. I have been taking pictures for eight years and if I've learned anything at all I have learned that it's not about the equipment you have but the eyes you see through. My eye for composition and emotion has aided me in coming as far as I have now. At 18 years old I am more ready than ever to go out there and share my art with the world and allow others to read the stories I have to tell through my photography. I wish to attend art school for 4 years and graduate with an internship to a photographic magazine where I wish to build a portfolio and name for myself. In all of my images you'll be sure to see the passion I have for this art I call my life. I should be chosen for my desire to be a photojournalist, my love for photography, and dedication to the art form. From special events, to family and friends, to local news/disasters, to a fallen balloon left to wither in the street, I have incorporated photography into my entire life and that's where it shall remain.
