My Travel Writing Scholarship 2011 entry - Journey in an Unknown Culture

VIETNAM | Tuesday, 22 March 2011 | Views [325] | Scholarship Entry

This is one of those two people on their motorbikes and sunsets including stories which unfortunately does not turn out into the romantic plot. It was not only the matter that we were two tall quite ugly looking guys experiencing roads of Vietnam, which is already far from all the sexy things, but it was saturated with step by step following micro tragedies for one of us – me!

I and my other friend Mathew arrived to Dannang in Vietnam by crossing half of the North-South Vietnams railroad from Hanoi. We say, what does not kill us, just makes us end up drinking. As a logical consequence, we jumped off the train all sweating with particles of the other peoples’ and their chickens’ mixtures of smell and immediately 50 km/h fast night train seemed to be rotting far in the past.

Hostel booked, motorbikes rent. No documents required, no in advance payment done. Just get and drive. My friend has received relatively good nice looking navy color absolutely reliable motorbike. In Vietnam they call those motorbikes ‘American carriers’. All in all, I frankly liked the sound, design and qualities of the bike – the only one disquiet for me was that I received something absolutely opposite to that. Something which had two wheels, engine assumingly remounted from grass-cutting-machine and three different brand stickers on top of it. The future has never been so bright!

I didn’t accept this challenge but there were no more bikes I could chose from, so the challenge apparently accepted me. We started engines to head for Hoi An – touristic city about 27 km away from Dannang by the highway. In a manner of speaking, neither my bike was built for highways nor it was an actual highway. It seemed to be more likely a country road full of bicycles and people carrying the most interesting things.

Two minutes after reaching Hoi An, front wheel of my motorbike hit the stone. Besides the fact that my speedometer has never been functioning, first sacrifice was made – loss of all the lights of my stallion. The night has come and the land was already dark. I have got to enjoy my further ride.

We have made a few circles around Hoi An, enjoyed atmosphere there, ate ice-cream near by the river and hit the road back. As long as the conditions of my bike were slightly modified I was driving close to my friend that I could see something on the road. We increased the speed. Due to some still unauthorized reasons my back tire suddenly got flat and I could not control bike properly anymore. So, I softly landed in the bushes near by the road. Few scratches on eyeglasses, everything was fine, tire was flat, friend was gone, I was on my own in the middle of nowhere at the middle of night.

Then you face the moment when you start to think whether those situations fall onto all the people equally or there are chosen ones?
