“Byurn!” Said the young green-eyed man in the blue uniform stamping on one of my passport pages. I believed the Turkish word meant “Here you go madam!” I looked at the stranger, whom I believed was a typically Turk with his very fair skin yet very dark straight hair and green-grass eyes, smiled and replied “tesekkürler”. That was the only word I have learnt before stepping on this foreign country.
I looked at the red stamp on the passport page and tried to read the word on it but in vain. I suddenly shivered. I shivered to the idea that this is my very first trip to a foreign country.
I started walking towards the door, and then I stopped to have a look at what surrounded me. The airport was crowded with passengers who were carrying their cases impatient to rush out of the airport and embark on their dream journeys. On my left, I could see a couple whose eyes brimmed with excitement and joy. I could sense their happiness and readiness to be flown to their far flung joyful destination. And I somehow could share their excitement. As I stand in the middle of the crowd, I could hear people’ snippets of conversations as they pass me on their ways to next gate maybe. Some were chatting about life and the weather in Paris , others were laughing out loud feeling an undercurrent of excitement to the idea that they will be soon on board towards their new destination. I could even smell and eventually recognize some hypnotizing perfumes I used to wear. I could also see some people sitting on those famous uncomfortable chairs, some were holding books in their hands, flicked through their pages for the second time, yet seemed ready to do that for the third time if that would take the boredom of waiting for their flights away. I walked towards the gray chairs wanting to relax for a while before starting my journey of discovery. I sat on one of those chairs, closed my eyes for a while feeling the movement and sound of the airplane on my skin and whole body I breathed, opened my eyes again wanting to contemplate more what’s around me. Colored luminous signs were everywhere in the airport, indicating gates, arrival and departure halls, Wc , check-in and check-outs. Some voices were coming to me in a very loud way: a mechanical female soft voice was calling for a passenger to go to a courtesy phone, another was announcing that flight number 225 was now on boarding gate 15.I then stood up and walked towards the door which automatically opened in front of me.
