My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Three years ago, I took a few days off work, packed my backpack, and boarded a flight to Jakarta. I knew no one except an online friend by the name Mutiara. Travelling on the bajajs, Angkots, and trains; seeing how others lived; and meeting Mutiara’s family, made me realized that I want something more in my mundane life.
Since that first flight to Jakarta, I’ve returned to Jakarta a few more times. On each trip, I forged new bonds with new people; and closer bond with people that I’ve already known. I chatted with strangers. And exchanged views on multitude topics. I’ve attended weddings, and met new additions to the family. I’ve learned some of their culture and their language.
These photos reflect some of my experiences in Jakarta. Riding the bajaj in notorious Jakarta's "macet" (traffic jam). Observing the preparation of a bride before the solemnization of marriage. Witnessing the solemnization of the marriage. Watching a unique custom of a little "tug-of-war" between the bride and the groom using a roasted chicken - it was believe that who ever gets the chicken's head is the actual leader in the marriage. Seeing the bride being prepped and dressed again for the custom of "bersanding" (sitting on the wedding dais).
My life was enriched. My horizon was broadened. So, as soon as I fulfilled my contract as an assistant manager in a telecommunication company, I tendered my resignation. I had to leave before the lure of material gains clouds my passion for travel and photography. I’m now unemployed, ready to begin a new exciting chapter in my life. I want to share the enrichments and excitements I experienced with those who don’t get to travel. I want to make my mark in travel photography.
