My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

The property I have depicted in my selected photographs is close to home but feels a million miles away. It could easily be seen as just a run down farm with a beaten up caravan in the yard, but I see and feel so much more. The experience of being in this place and the feelings of solace and intrigue that the experiences, people, landscapes and wildlife evoke are special, and I feel I captured this in my selected photographs.
I feel I have the potential to see and subsequently capture not just one aspect of a place, but all of the things big or small, obvious or subtle, that make a place special, whether it is a seemingly small place like the property in my photographs, or the vast expanses of somewhere like South Africa. Though, this potential is something that needs to be nurtured and I have a burning desire to learn constantly how to better capture this world through the art of photography and share it’s stories. I think this is why I deserve to be awarded this scholarship.
I took my first ‘photographs on my fathers old pentax from the 70’s which was a film camera, so there was little room for error with no where near the amount of possibilities to enhance a photograph as with digital cameras. This is when I fell in love with the joyous challenge of authentically capturing moments in photographs and gained respect for the true art of photography. This authenticity is what I see photography to be all about, and the photos I have submitted have had little or no retouching in respect of that. I would cherish the chance to be offered the opportunity to further my skills in this art form and share it with the world.
