My Photo scholarship 2010 entry
Worldwide | Sunday, October 17, 2010 | 5 photos
My photos are abstract interpretations trying to make sense of the lost culture, spirituality and traditions of Aboriginal people, through displacement in Australia.
By looking upwards, I found deeper meaning to the effects of colonisation discovering totems, artefacts and rituals in and around Sydney.
In my photos, a building reminds us of an aboriginal painting, lines and colours acknowledging Aboriginal culture. A sculpture, near Central Railway, now a modern totem. The Harbour Bridge no longer connects, with Sydney Harbour overshadowed by clouds. Finally, the iconic Opera House, depicts a modern day corroboree.
To be chosen for the 2010 Scholarship, would provide me with many opportunities to grow as a photographer. In going to Bhutan I would be combining my love of travel, with my passion for photography.
Having studied Fine Arts and Social Ecology, I want to tell natures’ stories in powerful and evocative ways. Hopefully, people will then preserve nature, instead of destroying it. Having worked for The Wilderness Society, I want to contribute further to preserving nature and endangered wildlife.
I want my photographs to be of service to the planet. Spirituality, the environment and culture are important influences in my photography. As an artist, I have exhibited in several exhibitions. Most recently, I curated an exhibition, A Return to Spirit with four artists. I aim to exhibit in Art Galleries, to help the environment and Indigenous people. My influences include Pachamama Alliance, Nick Brandt’s stunning wildlife photography and The National Geographic, with its’ commitment to adventure, environment, culture and exploration.
Field photography with NGM, in Bhutan is an opportunity to learn to create images that are rare, amazing and unique. Bhutan, with its flourishing flora and fauna, would be the perfect place to learn to photograph rare and endangered wildlife, offering me an exceptional and unique experience.
