My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Chang Su Ho Garden, in Shanghai, China is defined by the vibrant rowhouses surrounding the garden and lively streets aching to tell the stories of multiple generations. A seemingly uncharacteristic quiet walk around the garden presented me with a sense of a past lifestyle, albeit not too from the present.
Ashen brick and forlorn stone walls, tattered and worn canopies, haphazard wires, rusted air conditioners and bicycles parked neatly outside, provide just a minor glimpse of the exuberant nature of this part of the city, that has forbidden to turn its back on its history.
Photo 1 exemplifies how each of the rundown facades tells a story; each crack and blemish a wrinkle in the Chang Su Ho Garden’s history. As I stood to take this shot, I could vividly imagine a bustling alley filled with old ladies doing laundry, children shrieking with joy, adults clamoring on their bicycles, and old men playing Mahjong.
Photo 2, captures the tininess of this narrow alley, that is by no means limiting to vibrancy. I imagine children sneaking out of their homes, tiptoeing ever so lightly on the wet surface of the brick paving while a few young adults look down from one of the open windows above.
As you venture further, Photo 3 encapsulates a rare moment personifying this place, as the wandering dog ever inquisitive, appears to have just a slight chance to pause and ponder history.
These photos are indicative of my skills that will be useful for your project. I take each shot with a purpose to convey a story. I love adventure and document every place that I visit with great appreciation. I am a student of photography with so much to learn and, this scholarship can help me start a career in travel photography.
