Arriving in Iceland is like landing on the moon. As your plane descends, the black lava and swirling mist invoke an air of mystery. As soon as you touch down, you'll notice the vibrancy of the colors. Everything is the green of grass and moss, the ice blue of Arctic sky and flowing waterfalls and the black of lava rock. From the city of Reykjavik, we headed out on the "Ring Road" to visit the cluster of natural phenomena that surround the capital, otherwise known as the Golden Circle. Driving through fog and sporadic downpours, we visited the national park Thingvellir, where the Atlantic and European tectonic plates pull apart by a few centimeters each year. Next was Geysir, home of the original geysir and Strokkur, another, more powerful one. Then we saw Gullfoss, the largest waterfall in Europe. We also had time for the Kerid volcano crater and a side trip to Skogafoss, where we climbed up above the waterfall and found even more falls on the glacial plateau. It's an experience I'll never forget.
