A close up view of one of the vertical pillors. The gate was that tall the whole tree looked like it had to be used. The base of the gate looked like the trees had grown there (looked like they had roots going into the ground). One way of preserving the wood is to concrete over it! Seems to be working alright!

How they make Miyajima's very popular and delicious Momiji manju. Basically it is a pancake in the shape of a maple leaf filled with chocolate, bean paste or custard. Rather tasty I felt.
