My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Worldwide | Sunday, November 6, 2011 | flickr photos

When I saw the ad for the National Geographic Photography Scholarship to South Africa, I truly couldn’t believe that there was such a program. Through combining my love of travelling with documenting, I felt inspired to send in an application.
Through my first trip to Europe when I was in my early teens, I found a great passion in taking photos. I took Photography (studio arts) in my VCE and found it particularly rewarding. As I am an energetic girl up for any challenge, I made two journeys through Borneo and China whilst at high school, and found myself not only stimulated by the countries history, culture and environment, but through documenting parts of these countries with my very own lens.
Winning the Doug Moran photography prize in the VCE section in 2010 provided great motivation to share my way of seeing with the world. Through this experience I met the incredible photographer Stephen Dupont. As Stephen read out my name as the winner of the competition, he described my photo as being of “capturing the emotion within the moment.” I was very humbled by Stephen’s words, and this is something that will forever encourage me to continue taking photos.
Even though my education has led me to study Health/Sciences and International Development at La Trobe University, I am often found creating compositions of the environment in my own minds eye, this is of course if there isn’t a camera already in my hand.
I have a great desire to feed my passion for taking photos, and would truly love to broaden my experiences. To travel to South Africa whilst being mentored by Jason, I feel would be a gift to my passion.
