Life of a Circus Roadie Nomad

My Scholarship entry - A local encounter that changed my life

After five months touring around Australia with the circus the vivid images I recall most is the bright red dirt in Western Australia that was the colour of hot paprika. The icy green coloured shrubbery that contrasted against the red dirt.

The never ending horizon and uninterrupted skyline in the Nullarbor desert plains with a mass expanse of starry nights blanketing the skies.

How the edge of coast line between South Australia and Western Australia dramatically dropped 100 metres into the ocean with the expanse of sea facing towards Antarctica. The severe offshore winds bending the roots of all the shrubs and branches in a northerly direction.

The Southern Wright Whales rolling in the ocean at the Great Australian Bite Marine Park with their fins slapping, splashing and spraying the waters. Their deep submarine honks resonating throughout the entire bite and bouncing back off the cliffs and into the ocean again. The fifty or so magical creatures were meditatively peaceful to witness rolling at ease with their calves. The Great Australian Bite felt wonderfully protected, calm and isolated.

Towards the distance were pure white sand dunes adopting every nuance of colour from the setting sun, evolving from white, to yellow, to orange and brazen red before blending into darkness. It really is a beautiful country and the isolated areas of the desert will be imprinted into my mind for years to come.
