Fortunately for Shakeelbhai, the clay found on the banks of Bhogavo river, a few kilometers away is excellent for pottery and is freely available.

“Earth, water and your hands, that’s all you need,” philosophises Shakeelbhai, while working on his manual potter’s wheel that costs a mere 1,200 Rupees ($20). And that’s all the help he’s managed from the Government in all these years.

Through his trade, Shakeelbhai barely manages to make 150-200 rupees ($3-4) on a good day. Tough competition from cheap and easily available plastic products means a bleak future for him and his children.
