My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

South Africa | Tuesday, June 18, 2013 | 5 photos

I am in my final year of my Photojournalism degree and have this colossal dream to work for National Geographic one day. I flourish in feature photo stories about people. I love more than anything to tell people’s stories with my photos, and my warm character allows people to open up to me and my camera. This piece documents the typical white, middle class family in South Africa; one of the most unequal, contradictory countries in the world. I wrote a feature article that accompanies the story, but I hope that my photos alone show the subtleties within the lives the majority of white people in SA that were born into a completely unearned privilege.

I am constantly learning more about myself and the world through taking photos, and know this opportunity will be the ultimate experience to learn even more and broaden my cultural, life and photographic horizons. I know that ever since I set my hands on a camera, I had unlocked a new dimension where I could expand my imagination.

I know how to look at things from different angles constantly, and I have a bright, hard-working and positive attitude towards the world - that would come completely alive and thriving on a trip like this.
