lookout from indian head

I arrived three days prior to my trip to Fraser island in hervey bay, thinking that there should be something to do in hervey bay. Boy was i wrong. Hervey bay turned out to be a boring little place. the only reason to go there is to get the ferry to Fraser island.

But you have to do something there, so i went to the beach. The beach wasn't that bad but swimming was out of the question. the water was way to shallow and there were al kinds of "locals" in the water you don't want to meet. When i was just knee deep in the water i already saw a baby shark and a few (sting)ray's.

And then, finally the trip to fraser began. Immediately had a good start, i was driving the 4 wheel drive(although my first few feet weren't that good...)We were first driving through town, getting some groceries and making our way to the ferry. After the ferry ride, it was time for some serious off roading :-). The first part on the island was straight through the rainforest so that was quiet bumpy.after that, the flat beach? well, you couldn't really call it flat, ok, it wasn't as bumpy as the rainforest but it was nowhere near a normal road either.

We drove to indian head and the champagne pools. indian head was really cool, you could see shark(s) from there and ray's! the champagne pools are called like that because the waves hit the rocks, splash over the rocks and " bubble"  in to the pools. it really looks like champaign if you're in there(mind you, it doesn't taste like champagne at all!) And there were also heaps of prety little fish! after the pools we went to our campsite--> camping on the beach! for dinner we had a barbie, and after that it was time to bring the alcohol out!because it was already pitch black at 6 pm, we were already pretty pissed at 22 so everybody went to bed "early".

The second day we went to Eli creek. This is the biggest freshwater stream on fraser.THe funny thing is, that if you walk upstream, you can let yourself just floatback to the beach! We also went to lake wabby, this is an (emerald) green freshwater lake, whith huge snaddunes next to it! the dunes were pretty steep, the lake bottom was pretty steep as well so it was perfectly" safe" to run down the hill and jump in (watch out for faceplanting yourself in the dune though)!

The third we woke up and.... found out that our campsite was raided by dingos. On fraser island there are heaps of dingos and they're not really shy! and because we left some stuff out, the dingos had a feast while we were sleaping, after cleaning that up, we went to central station. This was an old logging station. We saw a pretty big goanna there and we had a nice walk through the rainforest. After that it was time for lake mackenzie. This lake is absolutely magnificent, clear white sand, blue water, green surroundings.... we were there the rest of the day untill it was time to head back to the ferry.

back in Hervey bay we finished the trip with a dinner at a local irish bar.

some interesting facts about fraser(at least, i think there interesting)

  • it is the biggest sand island in the world.
  • beautifull lakes to swim in
  • very dangerous ocean to swim in(sharks, current, jellyfish...)
  • dingos roam the island, not scared of humans at all
  • although it exist only of sand, it has some beautiful rainforest

se ya, rob

I have lived in Hervey Bay for many years...I find it far from boring...boring comes from within your soul, If you love long stretches of white sandy beaches, a beautiful foreshore with miles of paved walking and cycle tracks, safe swimming, rock pools, sailing, kayaking, skin diving or sky diving, you will love Hervey Bay. You can be as busy or as relaxed as you like...the people are friendly, with accommodation for all budgets. There is adequate shopping for the shopaholic, cosy restraunts or noisy clubs...bowling, tennis or golf clubs who make visitors feel most welcome, an art gallery and historical museum. Fraser Island is on our doorstep and we are at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. No, Hervey Bay is definitely not boring..........

Sorry Jan - I live in Hervey Bay too & I am terminally bored. I accept that "boring comes from within your soul", but what if you don't love long sandy beaches & sky-diving? The people of Hervey Bay aren't overly friendly, shopping is sub-standard and the one nightclub is a joke. Perfect for the lawn bowls set, but most young people who live here get out as soon as they can. Hervey Bay is definitely the most boring town on the coast of Qld - & I'm moving.

When I was young and getting drunk and clubs was the only thing on my agenda, I found it boring too as in there was 1 club...I am however still in my early 20's and love the place now! I appreciate the beaches which arent overly packed with tourists and enjoy the nature surrounding me! There are many things touristy to do there but Im over that I now appreciate it for what it is. Frankly Im bored in melbourne in a concrete jungle, I'd rather be 'bored' in Sunny Hervey Bay!! I met some young ppl who lived there and were gna move, and hopefully they do as they were drug addicted idiots who thought life was living like a rock star and had perceptions sydney would be i quote a 'rockin' place'!! I cant wait to move there permanantly and start my life :) If I get bored I'll drive to Brisbane, catch a ferry to Fraser, visit one of the many pubs, hang out with family and friends....

I completely disagree. Hervey Bay is far from boring in my opinion. I've only just turned 18 and from the moment I moved here 6 years ago I just absolutely adored the place. I've lived in many places but Hervey Bay is definitely my favourite so far. I guess it really depends on your point of view, but if you relax and actually look at things you'll find plenty of beauty in this place. I love the shopping, and I like the night club, and the taverns and pubs. I don't need more than one night club to have fun... Just as you'd get anywhere, there are a few dodgy people, but on the whole, most of them are pretty relaxed and friendly. If you have a good knowledge of the place you'll know when and where all the good stuff happens. But if you visit once and things are slow or the weather is bad or one small thing makes you dislike the place, then you are in no position to judge the town. Some people just can't be pleased.

I'm glad you think its boring - one less idiot tourist cramming up the area with negative perceptions

I am after honest opinions on a possible migration from Victoria to Hervey bay. I have a young family and am worried about employment opportunities for my husband. Who can comment on employment in HB?

Hervey Bay really isn't as bad as you seem to make out. Seeing "baby sharks and rays" knee deep in the water? What a crock. I've lived here 18 out of my 22 years and have never seen a shark in that water, and I've only seen a handful of Rays. If you found our town boring, then you weren't searching for things to do. We have everything bigger towns have, just not overkill amounts of them. Being new to the town you'd think you could at least for something to do for 3 DAYS!

Its interesting to read these comments on Hervey Bay as we are a family thinking of moving over from NZ in the next year. We have 2 kids and hoping it would be a fun place to live and great beaches. We are also concerned as Iozza wrote in Jan about employment opportunities and wondered if anybody can give us some opinions on this subject.
