My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

day in the lives of Africans:
Capturing the beauty of the world invigorates me. Looking through the viewfinder, I love playing with the numerous angles, lighting and composition to create an excellent photograph. My camera lens is an extension of my life experience and what I see. I love the freedom of creating a story all within a frame and being able to share what I witness through my photography. I love documenting my surroundings- whether at home in my daily life or on the road in a new place, exposed to how others live, witnessing daily routines and traditions. The photos I selected were often taken quickly due to circumstances or movement of my subject(s) yet capture the moment and place well.
1. Women balancing baskets on there head- captures the essence of a 4 day trek hiking in the heart of the Usambara Mountains, Tanzania.
2. I reached a village where kids were intrigued to see a Mzungu’s (white person) and gathered all around me. Older kid stood out with his bike.
3. Hiking amidst the farms and villages, men and children were carrying firewood in their vibrant cloths and stopped to say hello.
4. Men selling snacks from the side of a bus, even with the bus in motion.
Being chosen to travel on assignment with Jason Edwards would be an honor and an incredible opportunity to learn new photography techniques, experience how a professional travel photographer views the world through a camera lens and composes shots. I’d also gain invaluable knowledge and understanding how it is to be a travel photographer.
