My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Mauritius | Sunday, October 17, 2010 | 4 photos

I am fairly new to photography. I have always been interested in taking pictures because my dad was a good photographer. As i am in university and wanted to buy a camera so bad, i worked part-time and saved up for a camera. I was so happy when i finally got it, and i started taking lots of pictures of everything i found interesting.

Soon enough i became friends with a lot of photography students and got to see their pictures. After having been through a lot of pictures, i got to realize that i see the same pictures over and over again, the same angles, subjects ,etc. Very few pictures came out of the lot. I realized that it is not about the picture itself, its about the message behind the picture.

Sadly my little country Mauritius has become saturated with photographers that are satisfied with 'poor shots'. My aim is to inspire them, make them see the message in the frame so that they in turn inspire people.

Well my pictures are from the city of Curepipe in Mauritius. I used to go to college there and it is my favorite town of the country. It is nicknamed the "Ville de Lumiere" or City of Light in English. It is a truly a magical place, very colourful and vibrant.

My main topic is food. Why? well because i always have trouble to find something to eat when am there. I wanted to show the survival kind instinct in people to feed themselves and to live their lives.

Finally i am Rishi Ramgutty, 22 years old ,student in design advertising and am looking forward to get some response, whether positive or negative ,and to share my messages to you, to my fellow Mauritians and to the world.
