My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Laos | Sunday, June 30, 2013 | 5 photos

Hi there. My name is Rhys Acker. I'm 23 and live on the Central Coast of NSW, Australia. I work part time while studying marine science at the University of Newcastle. Studying science at an university level has forced me to reconstruct how I view human society and our place within the universe. These acquired understandings bleed into my photography philosophy, which is that diversity is essential to maintain integrity and to prevent creative stagnation.
I've always wanted to take up photography as a hobby. It wasn't until I saw David Attenborough give an inspiring talk last year in Sydney that I took the plunge and bought an SLR. Its been a continual learning experience ever since. I have had moments of both frustration with myself and astonishment from the pictures I've produced (more so of frustration however). I have no specific reason as to why I would be a better choice than any other person entering this competition. I can however promise that I am an attentive person, eager to put in the extra hours and do the jobs no one is willing to do. I will be the last person in bed and the first to wake during this Journey. Thank you for this opportunity.
