My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

New Zealand | Monday, January 14, 2013 | 4 photos

I studied Illustration, so colour palettes, composition and textures are in my mind all the time, but it's only in the past few years that I have started taking photography more seriously. I am self taught and have practiced and practiced, starting with my Grandad's old film camera, then moving onto digital when I could use an SLR. I think starting with film really made me consider each frame, composition and technicalities instead of relying on editing. Travel is my main aim in life. I am restless in one place and want to experience as much as I can. Photography naturally goes hand in hand with this for me. I don't agree that you don't experience fully "through a lens". I think I look closer and notice the small details that others may miss. A personal moment that I am able to record and share. I feel most myself when I am striding in walking boots with my camera in hand, in dramatic landscapes where I can feel small and in awe of my surroundings and continually intrigued and amazed. I am 24, and at the time where I need to decide what to do with my life, so this assignment would be such an invaluable experience with purpose and an outcome I could be proud of.
