Central Avenue PTY

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Monday, October 11, 2010 | flickr photos

La Avenida Central- Central Avenue, is Panama City's main place of commerce. Full of color and contradictions, in a small Central American country home of the Canal, victim of a dictatorship, witness to a military invasion.
In "La Central", as it is commonly called, we see a city very different from the "new Panama City of high-rises."
Why do I want to win? (or when "because I love photography" is just not a good enough reason).
I would like to go on this travel scholarship because I want to see and learn how a photo documentary travel project is carried out.
I want to observe and be a part of it.
How you relate to your subjects, specially in a foreign land, with a different language, and a diverse culture.
How you hunt down a photograph, or do you? Or does the photograph find you? Does the place progressively dictate what the what the essay will finally be about? I guess it all depends…
And well, basically, I want to see how you work, learn from what you do, and of course, be there to take my own pictures. See what I can do I this type of situation. Observe, listen, practice. Thats what I want.
So, a little information about myself:
I'm 33, I'm originally from Lima, Peru, but have lived in several places, as diverse as Cuba, Germany and Canada. I studied Industrial Engineering and Documentary Filmmaking, and work mostly as an editor. Quite a mix, but what I really want is to be a photographer.
I want to learn how to tell better stories through my images. I want to be able to express myself with honesty through my photographs. I really want to part of this experience. I know its an incredible opportunity and I would definitely learn everything I can from it. Thanks.
