Nobody knows where he will find himself at one point of his life. So, I never thought that when I turn 18 I’ll find myself in Galveston, TX. When I was leaving my home in Kazakhstan, which is on another side of the Earth, my dad told me a funny thing. He said, “Whenever you miss your family and home, just knock the floor and, in response, we will knock the ceiling.” Now I am 22 and I live in Las Vegas but I will never forget that trip to Galveston four years ago.
That was an unbelievable summer of 2008. I was a participant of “Work and Travel USA” student program. We were supposed to live in Florida but life brought me and a couple of other students to Texas.
I just finished my first year in college majoring in journalism and couldn’t hold my eagerness to travel and write. Instead, according to the program rules, I had to work as a housekeeper in the hotel since morning till the late night. I did not really have a chance to see the city and travel but I met so many crazy people from all over the world that I fell in love with that atmosphere of a non-stop party, American sense of freedom and happiness.
That summer made me to reconsider many of my points of view. I learned that many people are very bad in geography because every time I had to explain where I am from, noticing that the territory of my country is bigger than the whole Europe, by the way. I learned that American youngsters work and support themselves since they are 16, when in our countries we rely on our parents until we finish college. And… I learned that love can happen not only at a first sight. That is why now I am 22 and live in Vegas. I met my future husband in that frivolous summer, which turned everything upside down, which forced me three years later to leave my bigger than the whole Europe country on the other side of the Earth and come back to that guy from small Galveston, which took me to big Las Vegas.
I also learned that knocking the floor doesn't work but it's ok. I skype every day =)
