Overwhelming experience at the Elephant Nature Park

My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Thailand | Thursday, January 3, 2013 | 5 photos

My name is Rachel and I am a British/Canadian citizen living in Abu Dhabi. I am an ER nurse but currently taking my masters degree and raising our four year old daughter. I have always loved to travel and since picking up a camera six years ago I now view the world in an entirely different way. Recently we travelled to Chiang Mai in Thailand for the Loi Krathong Festival. While there, we visited the Elephant Nature Park, which is a place for elephants rescued from begging, logging and trekking. The stories of the different elephants and their rescues really resonated with me and I enjoyed capturing the details and the relationships and personalities of the elephants. I had only ever seen an elephant in the zoo before this trip and to help bath and feed them was a dream come true for our four year old, and an incredibly inspiring photography experience for myself. You should choose me for this scholarship because travel photography is what I love and I have absolutely no idea how I would go about doing it as a job! I enjoy trying to creatively present a place that I've visited in pictures. I have a lot to learn but I'm willing to put in the work. Plus I'm right next door to Oman!
