Dig or Die

UKRAINE | Saturday, 10 May 2014 | Views [122] | Scholarship Entry

Regardless it happened 2 years ago I still remember every bitter bit of my trying to become an archeologist, simply becouse I have a very real stigma to remember - beautifully shaped scar on my left hand and 2000 photo proofs. But I have to warn you do not keep your hopes up... this is not an Indiana Jones or Rick O'Connell kind of story, this is more like a story of a failure
So, location: 300 km from Odessa (Ukr), practically in the middle of nowhere
Aim: excavations of bulgarian culture 10 cent BC
Day of the Great Storm
The begining of trip could`t be better: all us 15 exited young students full of energy and expectations were unpacking, having rest, chatting and drinking wine. I should say that wine and cognac are the most important ingredients in archeological subculture, and we simply would`t have made it without it. Next day was suppose to be hard but interesting - our meeting with camp leader and actual beginning of excavations. What we did not know was that from that point for 2 weeks on mornings would start at 4 a.m., also that excavation site was located on extremely beautiful cliff above the lake Yalpug with not a single tree and as a result no shadow around, and that to get there we will have to walk for 50 min carrying shovels, water and food. And you know, when I was walking there for the first time at 4 30 a.m. after morning tea with my mates, listening to my new favourite track, surrounded only by virgin nature a thought crossed my mind "What can be better and more beautiful than that moment?" - "Freaking sleep and proper branch of course" - my brain immediately answered. But I had to carry on we all had. But seriously after all this discoveries you would think : «At least thats bottom line and the good thing about bottom-lines - it can`t get worse» But in about 30 min right when we started our way back to camp not gray but black clouds came, and we were happy "No sun no sunburns" We were fools enough to believe that rain wont start straight ahead, that it will give us 50 min. You probably expect that we were wrong and rain did start. NO, the storm did - it was not raining neither cats nor dogs - it was purgatorial waterfall from sky. I hope that you remember that we were supposed to carry shovels, well guess what shovel, person, lightning and open field is not a good combination - that my classmate learned. Thankfully lightning hit near her but it could have been her just easy. And it was the Day of the Great Storm - and we survived
