    Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament as it is today compared to what it used to be. This scene looks like it would be right at home in the middle of The Forum in Rome. It does showcase some Kiwi ingenuity through the use of shipping containers to work as support for the remaining structure. Views[437] A memorial consisting 185 empty chairs, each unique to represent the people who died in the February 2011 earthquake. It's easy to become over whelmed by the structural damage in the city, especially as a visitor. This memorial, created by local artist Pete Majendie, is a striking visual representation of the humanity of the earthquakes. Views[620] A shell of what once was. An office building waits to be demolished to make way for a new Christchurch. What really stood out was the silence. To be in the central business district of a major city yet to have it be so silent added to this overall surreal experience. Views[485] A fence bordering the red zone. What was a source of pride for the people of Christchurch is now a source of debate and conflict. The debate to restore the cathedral or build a new cathedral in its place brings to light the issues facing the city and its citizens. After arriving into the city I made my way to the CBD and started to explore the red zone, areas of the city still closed off to the public. The damage was shocking. It is one thing to watch news reports on TV, but walking amongst the reality of it was surreal. It was hard not to feel as if I was walking on a movie set, this was so far beyond anything I had ever experienced. It was all very interesting and sad at the same time. It was hard not to feel a small level of guilt walking around and taking photos. Views[404]
     
    Motutara Island which has been claimed by the gannets, takes on the force of the Tasman Sea as it meets New Zealand. Views[540] The gannet colony at Muriwai can be described as crowded at the best of times, the courtship rituals of a pair of gannets does not go unnoticed. Views[606] A gannet’s landing approach, scanning the cliff surface searching for an opportunity to land. Views[580] Perched above the waters of the Tasman Sea, the cliffs of Otakamiro Point are home to a colony of gannets. Gannets dive deep into the waters to feed on fish making this is a prime location. Views[710] Muriwai, situated 40 minutes west of Auckland, is a popular summer destination for Aucklanders.
