In the case of Mbaka Oromo Primary School, the answer is more than 600. Waves of children clad in pale blue and yellow uniforms trek up to ten miles a day to get an education.

In a region of Kenya decimated by AIDS and civil war, where children act as heads of household and must scavenge for food to feed their siblings, one would expect classrooms to have gone silent. After all, without guidance or sustenance, how many children would really choose to go to school?

Mothers from nearby villages hike to the school with grain on their backs and livestock in tow. They toil under the hot Kenyan sun, cooking of their own supplies so that parentless students have at least one meal that day.
