My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Worldwide | Tuesday, November 8, 2011 | 5 photos

The photos submitted were taken on a trip to Western Samoa. People of Samoa find joy and satisfaction in simple things in life, something that we have lost appreciation of in the western world.

Luxuries of the western world has not touched most of the Samoans and it gave me such joy to try and capture the simple moments in a Samoan's daily life.

From the moment that one wakes up and is greeted by the light filtering through the intricate pattern of the mosquito net, to when the family takes a early morning dip in the natural sea pool, everything is so simple and beautiful.

One sees children idling under the village fale after school, no complication of after school care or busy schedule like we have in the western world. The only rush the children are in is to take their family horse down to the sea to have a swim in the sea.
As evening draws near, one hears joyful sound of children playing hand clapping game inside their house. There is no distractive sound of the television in the background but rather harmonious rhythmic sound of hands clapping and continuous laughter.

We all need to step back and once in a while savour and appreciate the simple things in life, something that the Samoans do so well.

Photography is something that I enjoy and is something that is very dear to me. To capture a special moment in time with my camera gives me the greatest satisfaction. Mentored by Jason Edwards will be an 'out of this world' experience and the wealth of the knowledge that I will gain from this cannot be put into words.
