My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, unfortunately I have five, and I am limited to three hundred words, so here is my story within a story.
Anyone can surf the internet for Jamaica and find crystal clear waters, sandy beaches, and blue skies. They often don’t show the real Jamaica, the one I grew up in, and where I first became conscience of the poverty level. In the first picture it is the kitchen of love, of course only the best tasting foods are actually cooked over a real hot fire. In some country areas, like where my grandfather lives, electricity is still not very prevalent. The second picture depicts our “Mall” no this is cleary not the Aventura mall, but it meets the basic needs of the people. With the outdoor vegetable /fruit stand around the corner, and handmade craft works on every street side, Jamaican people know how to use their talents to survive. It’s Time to build a dog house, Home depot anyone? This picture is actually the community Lumbar store house. A jack of many trades, he built the shed himself, and also can make impeccable furniture that not even Rooms to Go can offer. This abandon ship represents the various cultures, religions, and nationalities that have stepped foot on Jamaican soil. “Out of many one people” is out motto, and it never has been more true. From blond hair and blue eyes, to sun kissed skin and midnight eyes, it’s all here. Finally to wrap it up, I had to put in a simple picture of what Jamaica looks like on a normal day, what most photographers show- the blue skies, sandy beaches, and crystal clear water. I should be chosen, simply because I shed some light on the not so conspicuous.
