My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

At this particular business school in Bangalore India the ratio of men vs. women is 9:1. The number of women being enrolled in college is rising everyday as more traditional families start to realize how important secondary education is not only for their sons but daughters as well. In 2009 I photographed a group of young women and their journey to obtain a degree at their male dominated schools.
The majority of woman who attended this college where from rural villages and were not expected to further their education past high school. One girl explained to me that if she did not do well in school she would have been married by the age of 14.
In 2009 when I photographed this story I was 19 years old and could not even begin to imagine the pressures of what that meant. Being married or fighting for my right to go to college. I looked at these women and could not help but think how brave they all were and how much they deserved to be there.
This story is just one of many I have created since starting my journey into photojournalism and documentary filmmaking. There is nothing else in this world I have ever wanted to do and I have been traveling and creating photographic stories for as long as I cam remember. Several of my other stories include topics such as the 1999 NATO bombings in Serbia, Proposition 8-gay marriages laws in California, and the G20 riots in London.
I currently live in New York City, New York and am graduating from NYU with my BFA in the spring. I have been interning at Rolling Stone Magazine since the fall and continue to create stories every day.
