My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Monday, August 30, 2010 | 5 photos

My name is Russell Quinn. I’m 22 years old and live in a small coastal village in NSW, Australia. I have been taking pictures for three years. I work for a small community newspaper, where I shoot anything from portraits to crime scenes. I devote every minute of my spare time to learning more about the craft. Whether it’s reading magazines, browsing online forums or spending entire days out in the field, I am determined to learn about light. Receiving this scholarship with Jason would be a dream come true. I really can’t put into words my desire to learn, and doing so in a place like Bhutan would be incredible. The photos I have submitted are from my first overseas trip to Indonesia in August. The first image “dreamland” was taken at a beach in Bali. I love the impact of silhouettes. This is a photo of my friends escaping the heat in a cave. The second photograph “Off to school” was taken at Kuta. I wanted to capture a shot that illustrated just how different the Balinese culture was to Australia. This is an image of a young boy racing to school on his scooter, while talking on his mobile phone. “Poppies Lane” is another image I believe sums up my experience of Bali. Although the city is highly westernized and full of expensive shopping boutiques, poverty is still very much still alive. This image shows an expensive gift shop situated next to an abandoned shack. The fourth image “Eva” is of our taxi driver’s seven-year-old daughter. She had a gorgeous smile and I snapped this one when she was telling us about her day at school. My final image “Sunset soccer” was taken on our last day at Kuta Beach. The Balinese love soccer and they have huge games on the beach every afternoon. I waited quite a while for the ball to go up in the air in the right position. Thank you.
