Photos: My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Routine is something I’ve always sought to avoid, preferring instead adventure and culture shock. The thrill of the unknown and unexpected drives me to travel whenever possible. Whether it means moving to a foreign country; taking a job leading tours in the Middle East; hitch-hiking my way across North America; backpacking through every country I can find whose name ends in ‘stan’ or simply heading off alone into the wild for a few days, my life would be incomplete without regularly breaking my comfort zone.
It’s my quest for new experiences that has taken me to 50 countries and seen me living in several countries, finally swapping the simple life in New Zealand for the diversity of Montreal.
My photos are my souvenirs and it gives me immense satisfaction to be able to capture a moment, a person or a landscape in a beautiful, iconic way.
Throughout my travels, my photography skills have developed slowly. My point-and-shoot was replaced with an SLR, the SLR was upgraded, filters and lenses were added to my camera bag and now what was a hobby has become a full-blown passion.
Despite winning a few Lonely Planet competitions and making sporadic sales through Getty Images, I am still a novice student. The more I learn, the more I realise I have to learn. This assignment represents to me the perfect opportunity to learn the skills required to combine my passion for travel with my love of photography into a rewarding career.
