It's been a couple of hours now since I touched down at Singapore Changi Intl Airport. I was met with a gush of still, hot air- it's 27 degrees here and just about bearable. (i'm not very good with the heat) Hence, my initial plans of exploring once i'd dumped my bags and freshened up soon frazzled out- pardon the pun! So i'm sitting here with the AC on writing this rather pointless entry for which I have nothing incredibly important to say apart from the fact that i'm safe and well.
Im staying with a uni friend who now works for a bank out here and, to be honest, life could be a whole lot worse! You really begin to see how kushty the life of an expat can be. He has been a gem and let me loose in his flat to do as I please. His and the hospitality of the Singaporeans overall must be commended. I have never arrived at an airport and received such an abundance of smiles and greetings. The people are very friendly and happy to help. You soon realise how stuffy and pretentious us londoners come across as. It's embarrassing and one begins to slip into "happy" mode, responding to the nods and smiles and generally becoming a bit more chilled out. I've just got to remember to keep my wits about me at the same time!
So, to sum up my first few hours as a nomad, I would say so far so good. Obviously there's a long way to go yet and things will inevitably get tougher but this has been the best way I think I could have begun the trip. I've eased myself in and am chanting my mantras continuously to give me the strength for what is yet to come.
Hope all is well in dreary England! I'll update more substantially in the days to come.
