Life lessons from the road

Lesson on the beach

The luxury of a 1-year work contract in Hawaii seemed only the stuff of which dreams are made. My dream came true. The moment I stepped off of the airplane I knew I was meant to be here. The unmistakable sweet smell in the air. The stunning Hawaiian culture. I travelled to Kauaii. A tiny, vulnerable island. The last in the chain. Three days of pure paradise nestled in a small resort seaside cottage. One evening, at sunset, journal in hand I nestled my toes into the warm sand, and began to write. It was not long after that I lifted my eyes to mother natures gift. A sea lion hauled its weary soul out from the waves of the ocean and made its way along the sand, resting only a few feet away from me. I dare not move. The gentle lion closed it's eyes in deep sleep.

Two locals happened upon me and my little miracle and said quietly: "excuse me, but it is not advisable to be so close to them when they are resting. This rest allows them to continue their journey and if interrupted, in turn it interrupts their travel pattern".

I replied with a smile on my face: "but you see, I did not choose him. He chose me"

It is in the moments of not chasing "the moment" that it finds us instead.
