Snowcraft weekend at Mt Ruapehu

NEW ZEALAND | Saturday, 30 July 2011 | Views [451] | Comments [1]

A fortnight later, some boxes filled but mmm…the house still looks rather full. At least the scrap metal guy was happy with the old washing machine, saving us a heavy job.
Last weekend we headed up to Whakapapa, the skifield on the north side of Mt.Ruapehu, for part 1 of 2 of the snowcraft course. A bit of walking, bum-sliding, practicing self-arrests with the ice axe, and having fun with the group. The weather turned out to be much better than anticipated, so good views to the white tops of the mountain and to the greenish-brown planes of the volcanic plateau to the north.
Another snowcraft weekend is planned mid-August, so fingers crossed for some sunny days!

Where are the ski-lifts? It's much easier than walking..!
