A Wren's Court

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Australia | Friday, October 15, 2010 | 5 photos

I want to combine my love of photography with my anthropology studies by travelling and photographing the amazing cultures and natural environments the world has to offer. This scholarship would enable me to experience a profession that combines the two areas that I want to work with as a living.
While it is interesting to read about different places, I think there is nothing as revealing as exploring the place itself. I am a person who loves learning new things and exploring the various viewpoints a subject can be seen from, be it anthropological or photographic.
The reason I feel I should win this competition is because I am not only dedicated, I also have the ability to capture emotion through my photographs. I want to enable people who are unable to travel to be just as inspired by the subjects of my photographs as I am when taking them.
I am an enthusiastic person, able to be patient and go the hard yard to get the photographs I desire. When I was taking the Wren photos for this competition I wanted to show how the tennis court was as much their home as a sporting area. I had to be patient and each photography session required me to be still and wait for the birds to trust me, so that I could take photos of the birds in the open and not in the nature strip around the court, as well as to capture authentic behaviour. I am willing to work hard and love to experience new places and people. But mostly I love to share my passion for the places I visit, be they my backyard or another country.
I want to win this competition because I want to learn more about how to convey this love, tell a story and gain professional experience in the industry I would love to work in. I desire not just to be a photographer, but also a visual anthropologist.
